Fernando Armenta

My number one priority is you, your family and our community! I recognize that government doesn’t always work, but I believe we must continue to make strides to make our County government work for the people. As your Supervisor, I will continue to lobby for federal and state dollars for our communities and will continue working with our community to better District 1 and the County of Monterey.

 

I have spent my entire life fighting for our families, and I have brought that same fighting spirit to the County of Monterey for the past 11 years. People from all walks of life make up our community, from seniors to business people, and from youth to those working in the fields. We all have dreams and aspirations. My goal is to make our County a better place to live.

Dave Potter

Incumbent - Monterey County Supervisor District 5

Since 1996, and currently serving his Fourth term, Dave has represented the Fifth District. The Fifth is a demanding district comprised of Big Sur, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, Monterey and Carmel Valley, and is known internationally for its tourism, dramatic coastline with unsurpassed views and its historic preservation. Prior to his service with Monterey County, Dave was a member of the Monterey City Council, the City’s Planning Commission and the Architectural Review Board.

This extensive background in local government has helped make Dave a successful leader in creating collaborative relationships among the county’s varied communities. Serving on many committees, Dave is the County’s representative locally, statewide and nationally for legislative advocacy, tourism, economic development and historic preservation. Dave provides Monterey County with an effective, articulate advocate who is regularly in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. to impress upon the legislators the importance of Monterey’s unique resources and its economic successes.

As a senior member on the Board of Supervisors, Dave realizes that it is only through cooperation and communication that difficult problems can be solved. Despite differing opinions and diverse backgrounds, common interests can be formed that will help protect and improve the quality of life in Monterey County and the State of California.

Joe Gunter
Incumbent - Salinas City Mayor

After six years as the Director of Security, he became President of the California International Air Show in 2011. He has coordinated with Homeland Security, the FBI, and other agencies to ensure the safety of the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and all in attendance at the events.

 

He sits on the board of the Central Coast Federal Credit Union and is the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee, responsible for reviewing and signing off on millions of dollars in loans.

 

He is a past president of the Women’s Crisis Center for Monterey County and has been a volunteer for the California Rodeo for over 30 years.

For many years he was a board member of the Bobby Sox as a coach and served as president of the organization. He is a member of the Italian Catholic Federation, the Salinas Elks Lodge and the Sons of Italy.

Pat Stephens

Incumbent - Soledad City Council

Pat Stephens currently serves as Mayor Pro Tem on the City Council.  She has been involved with the community since moving to Soledad in 1974. She retired from the Soledad Unified School District in January 2010. She and her husband Graig are the parents of three children and grandparents of five.  Pat was elected to the City Council in 1998 and served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2000 to 2002. She was re-elected to the City Council in 2008 and currently serves as President of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Government (AMBAG) and is the City Council’s appointed representative to the Monterey Salinas Transit District Board and the Soledad Historical Society. She also serves on two policy committees of the League of California Cities representing the Monterey Bay Region. She also serves on the City’s Development Review Committee and is the alternate City representative to the Association of California Cities Allied with Prisons (ACCAP).

Richard Perez
Incumbent - Soledad City Council

Richard Perez was elected to the City Council in November 2008. He has been a resident of Soledad since 1968. He retired from a 35-year law enforcement career having served the Soledad Police Department and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department. Councilmember Perez currently serves as the City Council’s appointed representative to the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority Board. In addition to volunteer work rendered as a member of several service clubs in Soledad, Richard is presently the secretary of the Soledad Lions Club. Prior to his serve on the Council, Richard Perez was the elected Soledad City Treasurer (1978-1993), Elected High School Board of Trustee (1993-1997) and was a past member of the Soledad Planning Commission (1988-1993). Councilmember Perez and his wife Susan are parents of three children and grandparents of seven.

Raul Rodriguez

Incumbent - Greenfield City Council

I am 46 years old and I grew up in Soledad.  In 1991, I moved to Greenfield and have made Greenfield my home for the past 21 years.  I attended Gonzales High School, Hartnell College and earned my degree in English from U.C. Berkeley.  I finished my teaching credential at Stanford University and was a middle school English teacher for 10 years in Soledad’s Main Street Middle School, the same school I attended as a kid. In 2001, I became a bakery manager for La Plaza Bakery in Greenfield, a family owned business.  I am currently on the High School Board of Trustees and am a member of the Greenfield Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.  I served two years on the Greenfield planning commission and have served as a member of the Greenfield Cemetery District.  I have been married to Ana Sanchez for 20 years and we have two kids: 18 and 13.  We plan to live in Greenfield for a very long time and expect to be involved in the community as much as possible.

Joe Grebmeier

Candidate - King City City Council

I have been a King City resident for 35 years. I worked for the Monterey Co. Sheriff’s Department for 22 years (1977-1999), leaving as the Chief Deputy Sheriff-Administration. I was the Chief of Police, Greenfield Police Department, (2003-2012) retiring in 2012. Chair, Board of Trustees, Mee Memorial Hospital (1992-2009), Councilmember, City of King (1992-2000), Past President, Monterey Bay Division, California League of Cities (two terms). Founding member, Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority, Past member, Emergency Medical Care Committee. King City Chamber of Commerce, Greenfield and King City Rotary Clubs.

 

 

I graduated from San Jose State University, in 1989, with a BA in Social Science and from CalPoly-Pomona, in 1995, with an MS in Management. I have also graduated from the first Leadership Academy-California League of Cities, the FBI National Academy, and the Executive Leaders Program (ELP)- Naval Postgraduate School.

Karen Jernigan

I’m running for City Council because I truly care about King City. I came to King City 35 years ago to work as a reporter for The Rustler newspaper. My news background taught me how important it is to be fair, to ask questions and try to see all sides of an issue.

For 30 years I’ve been a business woman so I understand the challenges of running a business. Together with my husband, John, we own King City Glass. I believe in having a balance budget and wise spending. I believe we should have a safe, clean and beautiful town. I want to see faith, hope and unity for our residents. I especially want to work to unite our Spanish-speaking and English speaking residents.

Steve Emerson

Candidate - Marina City Mayor

Steve has served on the Monterey Peninsula College Bond Oversight Committee (2008-2011) and currently serves on the Marina Economic Development Commission (2007- present). In November of 2009, Steve, Dorothy and a group of Marina community leaders came together to form The Marina Foundation. Now in its third year, The Marina Foundation was created as a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity to benefit the Marina community. The mission of the foundation is to help raise funds through donations and grants, that will benefit youth, teen, senior, and cultural programs in our city.

 

From a professional perspective, Steve is the Managing Partner of First Pacific Financial Services in Marina. The company is an asset management firm that works with individuals, companies, and non-profits to manage their resources to accomplish their individual short and long-term goals and objectives. Steve started the firm in Monterey in 2006 and moved the office to Marina in 2009. Prior to starting his own business, Steve worked at Charles Schwab & Company and Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter. He attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado and Santa Barbara City College and has a degree in Business Economics.

Darlena Ridler

Candidate - Marina City Council

I have been volunteering in Marina most heavily for the past 11 years. I am currently volunteering as the Chair of the Recreation and Cultural Services Commission and I am an active member of the Marina Rotary Club. I have served 6 years are the Chair of the Commission. During this time we were successful in bringing two major new facilities to the city: a new skate park and a new teen center. These facilities are integrated with the Los Arboles Middle School and Sports Field to form a complex where universal rules for behavior are applied to the betterment of our kids and our community. We engage with between 200-400 teens every day at the Teen Center.

 

I have received many awards for my volunteer service to Marina: 1) Woman of the Year 2011 Award from the Marina Foundation for outstanding service and dedication to the citizens of Marina in March 2012; 2) Commissioner of the Year for 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010 for the California Parks & Recreation Society, District VI; 3) the City of Marina Outstanding Volunteer Recognition – Outstanding Commission Member 2008, 2009; and 4) grants for 100 Best Communities for Young People, Friday Night Live, the ADA van for Seniors, the after school snack program, the sculpture garden, and the skate park.

Jim Ford

Incumbent - Marina City Council

I would work toward developing partnership with the private sector for job creation and provide incentive where warranted to improve job creations. My long term vision would be the creation of a world class city with growth opportunities for its citizens; a city where well paying jobs are plentiful in most disciplines, new businesses find it a desirable place to locate and/or start. A place where accesses to resources to grow are readily available.

 

I don’t believe the current budget, programs, and staffing levels are adequate for the service needs of a city this size. There is funding available to improve these levels and allow for growth. However, these reserve funds are not being utilized to maximize the city’s opportunities.

 

The Public Works Superintendent and Economic Development Manager are funded through the general fund. However, half of the Economic Development Manager position would be paid by the general fund and half by developers during the first year. After that, then it is fully paid by developer, as development occurs. The Airport Manager position is paid from the airport fund, not general fund.
